A Must-Read for Precision Machining: Classification, Properties and Applications of Common Industrial Ferrous Materials
In the field of CNC precision machining, ferrous materials are the cornerstone of industrial manufacturing. With advantages such as high cost-effectiveness, stable mechanical properties, and strong adaptability, they are widely used in automation equipment, precision molds, mechanical components, hardware tooling and many other scenarios. When customizing precision parts, many customers often have confusion about the grades, performance differences, and applicable scenarios of various ferrous materials. Shanghai Jinxi Precision Machinery has been engaged in CNC precision part machining for many years. Today, we will popularize the classification, core properties and uses of mainstream industrial ferrous materials, and analyze the precision machining key points of different ferrous materials combined with practical machining experience.
Ferrous materials used in the industrial field are core divided into two categories: carbon steel and cast iron, based on carbon content, alloy composition and process characteristics. Different grades vary greatly in hardness, toughness, and machinability, which directly determine the application scenarios and machining processes of parts.
1. Carbon Steel: Core Material for Precision Structural Parts
Carbon steel is an iron-based material with carbon as the main alloying element, containing almost no additional alloy components. According to the carbon content, it can be divided into three categories: low-carbon steel, medium-carbon steel, and high-carbon steel, which are the most frequently used materials in precision CNC machining.
Low-carbon steel has a carbon content ≤0.25%, with representative grades Q235 and 08F. It is soft in texture, with excellent plasticity and toughness, outstanding welding and stamping performance, not prone to edge chipping or cracking during cutting, and has a high machining tolerance. This type of material has low hardness and average wear resistance, so it is not suitable for high-strength wear scenarios. It is mainly used for conventional precision parts such as equipment brackets, fixed bases, ordinary connectors, and sheet metal structural parts, and is the first choice for general mechanical parts.
Medium-carbon steel has a carbon content maintained at 0.25%-0.60%, with 45# steel as the benchmark grade, which is also a popular material for precision machining. It balances strength and toughness, has balanced comprehensive mechanical properties, and can improve hardness and wear resistance through quenching and tempering heat treatment, with high dimensional accuracy stability after machining. It is often used in core load-bearing parts such as precision shafts, gears, lead screws, tooling fixtures, and transmission components, and is suitable for the machining needs of most industrial precision structural parts.
High-carbon steel has a carbon content 0.60%, with common grade 65Mn. It has high hardness and extremely strong wear resistance, but poor toughness and is prone to brittle fracture, with high cutting machining difficulty, which requires strict equipment precision and process control. It is mostly used for springs, wear-resistant gaskets, precision tool accessories, high-strength wear-resistant parts, etc., and is suitable for working conditions with high-frequency friction and high-strength pressure bearing.
2. Cast Iron: Special Material for Large Equipment Housings and Bases
Cast iron has a carbon content higher than 1.7%, with excellent castability, vibration damping, and wear resistance, as well as low cost and high compressive strength. Its disadvantages are high brittleness and low tensile strength, which cannot withstand tensile impact loads. It is mainly used for equipment base parts with complex forming and high stability requirements, with mainstream grades HT150 and HT200 gray cast iron.
HT150 gray cast iron has good fluidity, stable forming, and smooth cutting, which is suitable for making complex-structure boxes, pump bodies, valve bodies, bearing caps and other accessories; HT200 has higher strength and rigidity, with outstanding vibration resistance and wear resistance, and is mostly used for core base parts such as machine tool beds, large equipment bases, and cylinder heads, which can effectively reduce equipment operation vibration and ensure the stability of the whole machine.
3. Core Key Points for Precision Machining of Different Ferrous Materials (Industry Insider Tips)
The differences in physical properties of different ferrous materials lead to completely different requirements for CNC machining processes, tool selection, and cutting parameters. Low-carbon steel is soft and prone to tool sticking during machining, so it is necessary to optimize the spindle speed to avoid burrs; after quenching and tempering, the hardness of 45# steel increases, so cemented carbide tools are required to ensure dimensional accuracy; cast iron generates large amounts of dust and has uneven hardness, so dust removal treatment must be done during machining, and surface roughness must be strictly controlled; high-carbon steel has high hardness, so the cutting speed must be reduced to prevent edge chipping and deformation of parts.
