Design Choices That Can Reduce CNC Machining Cost

Practical DFM considerations for setups, pockets, internal corners, tolerances and standard stock.

Reduce unnecessary setups

Features accessible from fewer orientations can reduce handling, fixturing and accumulated setup error. Discuss whether a datum or feature can be redesigned without changing function.

Avoid difficult tool access

Deep narrow pockets, thin walls and small internal corner radii can require long tools, slower cutting and additional risk controls. Use realistic radii and depth-to-width relationships where function allows.

Use selective tolerancing

Apply tight dimensional and surface requirements only to functional interfaces. Identify reference features so the supplier can plan inspection efficiently.

Consider standard material forms

Part size, stock availability and near-net alternatives influence material waste and machining time. Early supplier input is most valuable before geometry and material are fully frozen.
